Provisional insurance
Also known as learner’s driving insurance, provisional driver insurance is available for those who are learning to drive. With the right policy in place, it means drivers can get out on the road before passing their test – with peace of mind that both them and the car they are driving are protected.
What is provisional insurance?
Provisional driver insurance covers drivers in their driving lessons and practice before they have passed their test. In short, it protects the driver and vehicle from any damage.
Can everyone get provisional driving insurance?
Provisional driver insurance is only available to learner drivers and is designed for those who are either learning via a driving school or through friends and family.
How does provisional insurance work?
Provisional insurance is required alongside car insurance. This means both the learner driver and vehicle will be protected. Learner drivers can also get access to third party insurance which means that any other person, their vehicle or property would be covered in the event of an accident.
Do I need any additional cover as a learner driver?
Provisional insurance simply protects the driver and the vehicle. If you want to be protected in the event of an accident or breakdown, you’ll need to take out an additional policy.
How long does a provisional licence last?
Provisional licences last for 10 years. However, it’s important to remember that you only have two years from the date that you passed your theory driving test to take your practical test. If not, you’ll have to retake your theory test.
Can you drive on a provisional licence after passing your test?
Once you’ve passed your driving test, your examiner will usually arrange for your provisional licence to be sent off to the DVLA. However, you are legally allowed to drive immediately after passing – using your provisional licence and provisional insurance. If you haven’t received your full driving licence three weeks after passing the test, you should contact the DVLA.
Can I drive my parent’s car with a provisional licence and learner insurance?
Yes, provisional driving licences allow learner drivers to drive any car. However, they must be accompanied by an adult who is over 21 and has held a full driving licence for over three years.
Can I drive alone with a provisional driver’s licence and provisional insurance?
No, you must be accompanied by a driving instructor or adult. They must also be qualified to drive the specific vehicle that you’re learning in and also meet certain driving requirements such as not being over the limit.
Where can I drive with provisional insurance?
Provisional licences and insurance allow you to drive on all UK roads, except motorways. This includes country roads, A roads and private tracks.
