Learner’s insurance
Learner’s insurance, also known as provisional insurance, is a means of insuring a learner driver so they can drive with a family member or friend. The learner is basically adding short-term, fully comprehensive cover onto the car of the person supervising them as the practise. This cover can last from 2 hours to 90 days. This gives both the learner and the car owner peace of mind, knowing that the vehicle, the driver, supervisor and car are fully protected in the unfortunate event of an accident.
Is it law for learner drivers to have insurance?
Yes. For you to access private lessons in someone else’s car, you will need to ensure you are covered by their insurance. If you are taking lessons in a car you own, you will need your own insurance. Whenever you are out on the road practising, you will need supervision. Some insurance companies insist that the person accompanying you be over 25 or have held a full driving licence for more than three years.
The learner, if they own the car, will need their own insurance and it is advisable that they cover the person who is supervising them on the learner policy.
Can the learner driver drive alone?
No, a learner driver can not drive a car, be it one they own or one that belongs to someone else, unsupervised. The supervisor is classed as being in control of the vehicle.
Are there any restrictions to Learner’s insurance?
Learner driver insurance does come with some restrictions. You must abide by these regulations or you could invalidate your insurance. You can only drive between 6 am and midnight if the car is not owned by you. You must display L plates to the front and rear of the vehicle. You must be accompanied by a qualified driver, who has held a full UK licence for more than three years. The car must be safe and in roadworthy condition.
Your learner driver insurance will expire at the time you pass your test so if you intend to drive away from the test centre, you will need appropriate full insurance.
Is it expensive to add learner’s insurance?
It can be costly to add learner driver insurance. According to The Guardian, a parent living in London could potentially pay anything from £71 – £126 a month extra onto their car insurance premium. They also recommend opting for a policy where you pay by the hour for learner insurance, as it could save you a tidy sum of money. Some providers do facilitate the pay by the hour principle and we can help you find the cheapest of those insurance quotes.
Whilst it may be expensive in the short term, it could save you money on lessons. The more opportunity you have to build up your driving experience, the faster you might pass your test.
