Bus insurance UK
A bus is more than just a vehicle, it’s a business and as such it needs to cover all its insurance bases. But which insurer will offer you the best UK bus insurance deal?
With our short online form and fast results, we can provide you with competitive bus insurance quotes to make your task of finding the perfect insurer simple and stress-free.
What insurance cover must a bus have?
A bus which transports passengers for a fee is a commercial enterprise and as such it needs commercial insurance alongside vehicle insurance, public liability and employers liability (if the bus is driven by employees.)
(We also offer minibus insurance, which is distinct from bus insurance.)
In the UK, a commercial bus will also need to have public, private or contract hire cover.
Additionally, bus companies often seek to include breakdown cover, property damage cover, legal expenses and personal accident cover within their bus insurance policy. Those companies who use their buses for tours can also take out tour operators’ liability.
Why would a bus need property damage cover?
Because a bus is so large, many companies like to cover their buses for property damage since it could inflict major and costly damage were it to impact a building.
Does bus insurance offer the same level of vehicle cover as a car?
Yes, in this respect the two vehicle types are the same and to drive legally on the road both need at least third party coverage. Like a car, buses can also opt for third party, fire and theft, or comprehensive cover.
Why does a bus need public liability insurance?
Transporting members of the public leaves a company vulnerable to receiving claims against them. From injuries during road traffic accidents to lost or damaged luggage, public liability insurance protects the bus company financially.
If my bus isn’t for commercial use, do I still need bus insurance?
Buses are often used by community or charity groups to transport people, or by companies for staff. And though in these cases the passengers don’t pay, in the UK, nearly all the same bus insurance cover is still required, other than the commercial insurance.
How can I reduce the cost of my bus insurance in the UK?
Factors like the number of seats on your bus, the annual mileage and the number of buses you have in operation all affect your insurance costs but can’t always be changed due to the needs of your bus company.
You can, however, employ drivers with an excellent driving history, good experience and a no-claims bonus. Think carefully about how you’ll insure your drivers – a named driver policy will save you money compared to an any driver policy.
Parking your buses securely when not in use, with CCTV in operation, and then installing dash cash cams and CCTV on board can also have a positive influence on reducing your bus insurance costs.
Remember, increasing your excess and paying annually rather than monthly will also help.
Can I get a multi-vehicle policy?
Yes. This would suit a bus company with more than one vehicle. In this case it is similar to a motor fleet insurance policy, or a mini fleet insurance policy. The difference between the two is the size of the fleet and this is often determined by each insurance company. Our bus insurance can cover multiple vehicles.
