Do I need van insurance?
Van Insurance UK is mandatory. It’s a legal requirement to have at least third party insurance for your vehicle, regardless of whether it’s for business or personal use (e.g. a van for domestic chores, shopping etc).
What is third party coverage?
When you use your van, third party cover protects you in case you injure someone or damage their property, as well as if one of your passengers is injured. This level of insurance can also cover you for fire and theft by a third party if added. It compensates you if you become liable for third-party injury or property damage, just as third-party insurance does.
Nevertheless, third party fire and theft doesn’t cover damage to your van if it is involved in an accident or in any other incident.
What is comprehensive van cover?
As opposed to third party fire and theft, comprehensive cover pays out in the event of theft, accidents or crimes causing your van to be damaged. In most cases, van insurance covers only the named drivers, but there is also any-driver insurance available.
Are van and car insurance the same?
Insurance policies for vans and cars are different, and you must know which policy is right for you when you take out insurance. It is impossible to insure a van with car insurance and vice versa.
Can I drive someone else’s van on my van insurance?
You can drive the van on your insurance policy, but you need to be aware that this only covers you for third party damage and not for damage to the van itself.
Can I insure a van that is not registered to me?
If you want to insure a van that you don’t own, make sure the insurer knows that you’re neither the registered keeper nor the owner. You shouldn’t expect every insurer to cover you as the main driver even if you don’t own the van, but some will.
How can I get cheap van insurance?
There are a few points to consider when trying to find cheap van insurance which we have listed below for guidance:
- Consider the size of your van, smaller the cheaper
- Compare van insurance policies
- Pay annually for your van insurance rather than monthly
- Status of work and van usage
- Enhance the security of your van
- Don’t park carelessly
- Don’t modify your van
- Do not include optional extras that you do not need
- Increase your voluntary excess
- Lower your mileage if possible
What is the cheapest small van to insure?
Among the cheapest vans to insure, the following should be looked at:
- Citroën Berlingo
- Citroën Nemo
- Renault Kangoo
- Volkswagen Caddy
- Peugeot Boxer
- Renault Trafic
- Volkswagen Transporter
- Vauxhall Vivaro
Can I drive a work van on my car insurance?
Whether you are driving a van for recreational or commercial purposes, you will need insurance. Your name will have to appear on the insurance policy of the van, and if you have insurance for another vehicle, it cannot be transferred. ‘Any driver insurance’ taken out by your employer would cover you.
Do vans need commercial insurance?
You need business van insurance (also called commercial van insurance) unless your van is strictly for personal use. Whether you use it for commuting or for working from one place to another commercial insurance will be needed. Some commuting may be allowed on a private insurance policy, but not for transporting work equipment, for instance tools.
Can a younger driver get van insurance for a business?
Any driver between the ages of 17 and 24 is considered a young driver by insurance companies, whether they drive cars, vans or most other types of vehicles so premiums would rise.
What details do you need to insure a van?
- Name
- How old you are
- What you do
- Your full street address
- An explanation of any prior charges and convictions
- Your medical history
- Use of a van
- Details about the van including its age, registration, make, model, any modifications
Why is my van insurance so high?
Since vans tend to have larger engines and more storage space, van insurance usually costs more than car insurance since there is a greater chance they will carry valuable cargo. In light of this, premiums are higher because claims are likely to be more expensive.
Can I use a car no-claim bonus on my van insurance?
Yes, however, you can usually only use your no claims bonus on one vehicle at a time so keep this in mind if you wish to use your no-claim bonus.
In what ways does business van insurance cost more?
The average cost of business van insurance varies based on your type of use, but it might be more affordable than a social only policy. Insurance costs are much higher when you are transporting goods for other people.
How does company vehicle insurance work?
Business car insurance covers the use of your vehicle for business purposes. This is different from a standard policy, which only covers commuting and social activities. Regardless of how you use your car, it is always important to keep it insured.
Who pays the insurance for a company car?
Employers are responsible for insurance, servicing, and maintenance. As the vehicle never belongs to you, there is no depreciation cost to be concerned about. However, if you are the business owner, insurance for your company van is your responsibility and therefore you must find the right type of cover.
